Period Problems

Over the years women have done their best to progress their education, career statuses, and overall quality of life. However, this has all been done often at the expense of neglecting routine pain and discomfort.

Taking into account the average woman’s cycle and fertility window, most women spend nearly 3-5 years of their life menstruating. During this time, many women have expressed immense pain that comes with their period. But, because pain during menstruation is so prevalent among young women, it is often ignored.

These symptoms of pain could be a sign of something called uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous tumors of the muscular lining of the uterus. The symptoms include (but are not limited to) abdominal pressure, pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and severe cramps.

...periods are uncomfortable, but they shouldn’t affect quality of life.

There are two main treatments for the symptoms of uterine fibroids; hysterectomy and uterine fibroid embolization.

A hysterectomy is a highly invasive procedure which requires general anesthesia, a few days in a hospital, several weeks to recover, as well as preventing future pregnancies.

However, uterine fibroid embolization (UTE) is vastly different. Dr. Saravanan Kasthuri, of Northwest Endovascular Surgery in Richland, WA, specializes in UTE. Unlike hysterectomies, UTE does not requires open surgery, general anesthesia, and patients have had successful pregnancies afterward.

If your periods are painful or heavy to the point of placing limitations on your daily life, we advise you to talk to your doctor.
